Mike’s college journey began at West Virginia University, where he completed three semesters before planning to take “just one semester off.” That break ultimately turned into 18 years before he returned to finish his undergraduate degree and later earned his MBA from Temple University.
“I had developed this sense of quitting something, which is not who I am or what I wanted to teach my kids,” Mike says. “Being a father to five children at the time, running a business, and continuing my education, there were mornings when my wife had to peel my face off the keyboard and help me manage everything on my plate.”
Experience on the Operator Side
Before joining Botrista, Mike worked on the operator side of the food and beverage world.
“I was a restaurant owner, area developer, and operator for a national fast casual chain,” he explains. “I also served on the Franchise Advisory Council, which gave me insight into how decisions made at the corporate level affect the entire system.”
His dual experience—as both operator and advisor—helps him clearly understand the challenges restaurants face daily. That’s why Botrista resonates with him.
“Botrista solves many of the issues I faced,” Mike says. “Our platform delivers operational simplicity and product consistency every single time. You can train your newest employee in minutes on how to make barista-quality drinks. I’m thrilled about the solutions we provide and even more thrilled to be involved.”
Thriving in an Ever-Changing Industry
For Mike, the food and beverage industry remains exciting because it never stops evolving.
“There is no such thing as complacency or boredom in this industry because it’s never stagnant,” he explains. “If you want to be successful, you must stay on top of industry trends and understand how they impact your business.”
Adapting to constant change comes naturally to him—and it’s one of the reasons he thrives in this field.
Advice to Live By
If Mike could give one piece of advice, it would be to find a mentor you truly connect with.
“It’s worth more than gold,” he says. One message from his own mentor continues to guide him:
‘Doing what’s right isn’t always easy, but it’s always right.’
“As a father, husband, son, and professional, that phrase serves as a grounding point for me in every role I take on.”
What Makes Him Most Proud
“What makes me most proud is seeing the success of my children,” Mike says. “I like to believe I instilled that same phrase from my mentor into them. My children are well-rounded, contributing members of society, and they have good heads on their shoulders. Watching them grow into who they are is the most rewarding thing.”
